Air-gen tech harvests humidity to generate electricity

We've already heard about so-called "fog harps" that use thin
wires to collect airborne water droplets, providing drinking
water even in arid regions. Well, an experimental new device also
uses wires to capture water vapor, although it proceeds to
generate electricity.

Developed by a team at the University of Massachusetts Amherst,
the air-powered generator (or "Air-gen") incorporates an
ultra-thin film made of nanowires. Less than 10 thousandths of a
millimeter thick, that film is sandwiched between two flat
rectangular electrodes, although the one on top covers only part
of the film, leaving the rest exposed to the air.

Produced by a type of bacteria known as Geobacter, the nanowires
themselves are made of an electrically-conductive protein.
Because of this quality – along with their surface chemistry and
the small size of the pores between them – the wires generate an
electrical current between the two electrodes, whenever they
absorb water vapor from the air.

Even in its current prototype state, the device is already able
to power small electronics, and it works in areas as dry as the
Sahara Desert. What's more, the scientists have now developed a
new strain of E. coli bacteria, which produces much greater
amounts of the protein nanowires. It is hoped that this
development could make the Air-gen commercially viable, perhaps
one day replacing the batteries in devices such as smartphones …
although the possibilities don't stop there.

"The ultimate goal is to make large-scale systems," says
electrical engineer Jun Yao, who led the research along with
microbiologist Derek Lovley. "For example, the technology might
be incorporated into wall paint that could help power your home.
Or, we may develop stand-alone air-powered generators that supply
electricity off the grid. Once we get to an industrial scale for
wire production, I fully expect that we can make large systems
that will make a major contribution to sustainable energy
production."

The study is described in a paper that was recently published in
the journal Nature.

Several years ago, a team at MIT also developed a system that
generated electricity utilizing ambient water vapor, although it
incorporated a series of water-repelling and water-attracting
conductive plates.

À partir du 26 février prochain, le Jardin botanique de Montréal
invite le public à découvrir l’univers mystérieux des plantes
carnivores. Cette aventure sensorielle a pour objectif de porter
un regard nouveau sur la grande diversité du monde végétal.

L’événement ludique et familial baptisé Les plantes de Mme Z se
parcoure comme une visite « clandestine » dans la
serre-laboratoire d’une passionnée des plantes étranges connue
sous le nom de Mme Z. C’est lors de son absence que sera dévoilée
une flopée de secrets botaniques.

À l’intérieur d’un tunnel énigmatique habité par une multitude de
végétaux hors du commun ou bien au cœur d’un laboratoire où se
dresse un véritable mur-vivant, les visiteurs auront l’occasion
de rencontrer toutes sortes de spécimens dont les célèbres
plantes carnivores.

Pendant que les jeunes pourront participer à des défis à leur
mesure, les plus grands auront l’opportunité de mener plusieurs
recherches dans la zone dite « d’invention ». « En sortant de la
serre-laboratoire, vous ne verrez plus jamais les plantes de la
même façon », promet les organisateurs au Jardin botanique.

IRT droht Schließung: Ist der Öffentlich-Rechtliche Rundfunk
wirklich so verrückt, seine Kronjuwelen zu verschleudern?

Während Ingenieure das Internet aufgebaut haben und am Laufen
halten, sind Juristen wiederum damit beschäftigt, es zu
zerschlagen. So die Meinung nach etlichen Abmahnwellen – und vor
den gegenwärtigen Empörungswellen in den (a)sozialen Medien, die
die Erinnerung an jene Dinge in den Hintergrund geschoben haben.

Über den Öffentlich-Rechtlichen Rundfunk kann man dies mitunter
leider ebenso sagen: Während Ingenieure den Rundfunk aufgebaut
haben, wollen so manche Juristen ihn zerschlagen. Manche Anstalt
wird inzwischen als Rechtsabteilung mit angebautem Sender
betrachtet.

Beim Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT) haben Juristen – genauer
gesagt, ein einzelner Patentanwalt – die Arbeit hunderter
Ingenieure nun definitiv zunichte gemacht: Die Schließung droht!

Die Aufgabe des IRT ist es, bessere Übertragungstechniken zu
entwickeln. Viele heute übliche oder auch schon wieder vergessene
Entwicklungen kamen von dort, sei es der Stereo- und Zweikanalton
zur Zeit des Analogfernsehens oder die MPEG-Codierung, die heute
allgegenwärtig ist, von der DVD über Sat- und Kabel-TV bis zu
Digitalradio. Meist denkt man hier zwar an die
Fraunhofer-Institute, doch das IRT und seine Mitarbeiter waren
mindestens ebenso wichtig.

So richtig bekannt wurde das IRT jedoch 2017 damit, dass ein
externer Patentanwalt dreistellige Millionensumem an
Patenterlösen für die MPEG-Patente beiseitegeschafft haben
sollte. Darüber traten alle Verdienste des IRT, die es ja
überhaupt ermöglicht haben, diese Gebühren einzunehmen, in den
Hintergrund.

Das ZDF zieht sich nun aus der Finanzierung des IRT zurück.
Angeblich, weil das IRT mehr für Radio als Fernsehen getan habe.
Was nicht stimmt, gerade die aktuellen 5G-Broadcast-Entwicklungen
kommen dem Fernsehen zugute!

Und dies nutzen ARD, Deutschlandradio, Deutsche Welle, ORF und
SRG SSR, um ebenfalls ihre Beteiligung zu kündigen. Damit steht
das IRT vor dem Aus, denn eine Übernahme durch die
Fraunhofer-Gesellschaften ist leider keine Option.

Mit dem IRT haben die öffentlich-rechtlichen Sender etwas, das
sich kein kommerzieller Sender leistet. Es wäre sehr töricht,
dies aufzugeben und so nicht nur die Produktion elektronischer
Geräte, sondern auch die Grundlagenentwicklung aus der Hand zu
geben und ausländischen Konzernen zu überlassen..

Sah es zunächst so aus, als sei all dies nur Taktik, um neue,
andere Verträge auszuhandeln, so scheint es den
öffentlich-rechtlichen Sendern doch tatsächlich bitterer Ernst zu
sein, das IRT loswerden zu wollen.

Annette Greca, Projektmanagerin und Gewerkschaftssekretärin bei
connexx.av München / verdi Rundfunk, hat eine Online-Petition zum
Erhalt des IRT gestartet. Diese wird natürlich alleine nicht
ausreichen, um ein Umdenken zu bewirken. Doch das wäre nötig. Die
Entwicklungen des IRT werden auch von kommerziellen Anbietern
genutzt – auch Apple, Amazon Prime oder Netflix nutzen
MPEG-Technologie. Schließt das IRT, werden wir schon bald teure
Lizenzen bei Dolby, Apple oder Huawei kaufen müssen, statt
umgekehrt unsere Lizenzen verkaufen zu können…
