Welcome to Hope BC Canada
Hope, British Columbia is located at the confluence of the Fraser and
Coquihalla rivers at the eastern end of the Fraser Valley and the southern
end of the Fraser Canyon. It serves as the junction of 4 of the province's
major highways, the Crowsnest Highway (Hwy 3), the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5),
the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1), and the Lougheed Highway (Hwy 7). As such,
when traveling to and from the lower mainland, all traffic passes through the
town.
It is the ancestral homeland of the Stó:lō people (people of the river), grouped
as
the Coast Salish people who have lived here for 10,000 years. The Stó꞉lō called
this
area S'ólh Téméxw and hunted land and sea mammals, such as deer, elk, and seals
and
fished for salmon as well.
Stó꞉lō elders explain that "we have always been here" and they tell of their
arrival in
S'ólh Téméxw as either Tel Swayel ("sky-born" people) or as Tel Temexw
("earth-born" people).
European explorers such as Simon Fraser first arrived in the area in 1808. The
Fort Hope
trading post was opened by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1848. By the time the
gold rush
occurred in 1858, the town became part of the new British colony of British
Columbia and
later, along with the rest of British Columbia, Hope became part of Canada in
1871.
The first library in British Columbia was opened by Reverend Alexander St. David
Francis Pringle
after he arrived in 1859. He then went on to establish Christ Church Anglican
church, the oldest
in BC.
Hope became a village on 6 April 1929 and officially became a town on 1 January
1965.
The town has been the location for the filming of Rambo: First Blood starring
Sylvester
Stallone, the 2025 Netflix series Untamed, and the TV series Highway Thru Hell.
The internationally broadcast radio show Pop Shop Radio, also transmitted on
shortwave, is
produced in Hope as well.

Ryan
Villiers is the winner for Hope’s 2025 World Class Chainsaw Carving event.
by Kemone Moodley
It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon (Aug. 17) as a large crowd gathered to see
which of the 12 carvers
would win this year’s competition in Memorial Park. The carvers had been
creating a storm of wood shavings
since Thursday, as they skillfully shaped their logs into impressive works of
art. And, after four days
of roaring chainsaws, Hope’s Community in Bloom crowned the winners of the
Pro-Carver class.
Villiers won the bi-annual competition with his carving of a blue whale pushing
a small boat into the air
out of its blowhole, with a Sasquatch paddling the boat.
Villiers is well known in Hope for his carvings of Sylvester Stallone as Rambo,
Brian Dennehy as Sheriff
Will Teasle, the Grinch, and the Cookie Monster for Boston Bar Elementary and
Secondary School.
Based out of Alberta, Villiers first started carving in 2017 after seeing the
Timber Kings and Carver Kings
shows on television. Since then he’s made a name for himself competing in
competitions all over North America
and Germany, and being part of different television shows. This includes being a
finalist on A Cut Above in 2022,
and being on the Jennifer Hudson Show twice.
He enjoys creating realistic works, whether it be animals or humans, as well as
carvings with pop culture and
cartoon inspired themes.
This is Villiers’ second year winning the chainsaw carving competition in Hope.
His previous win was in 2023
for his carving of a mountain lion mother and cub hunting salmon.
Second place went to Mark Colp’s carving of B.C. animals which also won this
year’s People’s Choice award.
Third place when to Chris Foltz’s carving of Canadian superhero Wolverine.
During the event, the crowd had the chance to bid on the pieces created during
the speed carving competition
(which took place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) as well as the main
competition’s finished entry pieces.
During the auction for the large carvings, which took place on Sunday, Colp’s
piece sold for $5,500, making
it this year’s most expensive item bid on during the chainsaw event.
The second most expensive carving bid on was Villiers’ carving, which sold for
$4,500. The third most expensive
was Brigette Lochhead’s carving, which sold for $4,000. Lochhead carved three
salmon jumping through the water.
In total, $23,000 was raised during the large carving auction.
In addition to bidding on the carvings, people were also able to shop at the
Chamber Market in the Park and
buy bannock, hotdogs, burgers, and poutine from the food trucks and vendors.
During the competition’s closing remarks, Hope Communities in Bloom Co-Chair
Teresa Williams thanked the volunteers,
who had been working hard since last Tuesday (Aug. 12) to get the competition
ready, and Mayor Victor Smith for
his support and for emceeing the event.
Smith also acknowledged the carvers and their incredible work this year.
“When you see the TV shows, they try to have the good guy and bad guy. And there
is no good guy or bad guy,” Smith
said. “All the carvers get along. And it’s like a brotherhood, or sisterhood.
And they create amazing art. They
will actually help each other get better and better. And it’s just amazing.”
The District of Hope ended up keeping four of the large carving entries, which
they plan to place permanently
throughout town. The pieces kept were Hope’s very own Hannu Yliruusi’s carving
of two sea turtles, Benji
Waretini-Hemara’s carving of a lynx, Marina Cole’s carving of a woman holding
the world while being surrounded
by a ring of light, and Porter Foltz’s carving of a dachshund.
Smith said Porter’s carving will be placed in front of the Hope dog park.
Meanwhile, Yliruusi’s piece is being
considered for the Dan Sharrers Aquatic Centre. Locations for Cole’s and
Waretini-Hemara’s works have yet to
be decided.

Chubby Checker and Dee Dee Sharp. Hey, I was just listening to Ron O'Quinn on KBC Radio, and then I hear this clip from the mighty KBC.
Speaker 2
Rick Springfield and Don't Talk to Strangers.
This is from an email from Kim Andrew Elliott.
It says: "From the dark and deserted rooftop deck of our river cruise ship near Druten in Holland, I just heard Ron O'Quinn and the KBC jingles on AM 891 kHz Maritime Mobile Reception on my little portable radio." (laughs)
Thank you, Kim. I appreciate you- I sincerely appreciate you writing in. Oh.

This is Peter John with the DX Headlines.
In these broadcasts during the years, I made a lot of use of the FLDIGI software for digital communication in DX Headlines and elsewhere.
I consider myself a real fan of FLDIGI, which I can say that I am of only a really small number of software programs.
FLDIGI, which stands for Fast Light Digital Modem Application, has been considered one of the most versatile software packages for amateur radio, for radio amateurs who want to delve into digital modulation mode for many years. The program, which runs on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux offers a wide range of digital modes ranging from PSK and RTTY to more specialized protocols.
This makes FLDIGI a really helpful tool for anyone experimenting with digital communications on the amateur bands. FLDIGI is open source and easy to use.
The package is constantly being improved by an active community and can be easily integrated with logging and contest software.
It also has smart features like automatic error correction, macros and fast communication and extensive settings options for different band conditions.
For radio amateurs, this means that experimenting with digital signals becomes easy and accessible. The software does not require expensive hardware.
A simple computer with a sound card and a transceiver is sufficient. Using it regularly after years of use, I still sometimes discover new functions that are sometimes hidden in buttons that I regularly use that I didn't know before. This probably is because it is set up to be suited for both beginners and experienced operators.
As you probably know, the software can be downloaded from www.w1hkj.com, www.w1hkj.com.
This was Peter John for the DX Headlines on the mighty KBC.
