This is Peter John with the DX Headlines.
Just like in the UK in DX Headlines two weeks ago, broadcasts of the successful station at the Dutch coast came to an end after a dramatic event.
Radio Veronica and seeing a new competitor in recently arrived Radio North Sea International, offered owners Meister and Bolier a substantial sum to cease broadcasting and certainly not to broadcast any Dutch language programs.
On September twenty-four, nineteen seventy, at eleven hundred AM, RNI bid listeners farewell by playing its final song, The Beatles' The Long and Winding Road. However, roughly half a year later, on February 14, 1971, RNI returned with test broadcasts on two twenty meters, thirteen sixty-seven kilohertz medium wave. After the captain that the Veronica bosses had placed on the ship was lured off and the sum of money received was returned to Veronica in cash. On Saturday, May 15, 1971, an incendiary bomb exploded on board of the Mebo II, the ship RNI broadcasted from. The oil pipeline in the engine room, as originally intended, was not hit, but Mebo II's water pipes. The stern of the ship caught fire. DJ Alan West was presenting a live English program at the time. There was English language programming in the evenings, was startled by the explosion while playing Blue Mink's Melting Pot and went to investigate. West just saw a small motorboat with an outboard motor sailing away. He ran back to the studio and, clearly panicking, called for help over the broadcasting transmitter, live from the studio. He repeated this call several times in English. Later, the Dutch captain made another call. Help arrived from fire boats, which quickly extinguished the fire. The station went off the air. There were no injuries. The damage to the Mebo II was limited. The upper part of the galley and the aft deck were largely burned down. The station was back on the air the next day. Although initial stories appeared in the press that Dutch Secret Service BVD was behind the attack, Meister and Bolier were said to have ties to the GDR regime or even Libya, and they were allegedly using the shortwave transmitter to send coded secret messages. It soon became clear that Radio Veronica was to blame. Three divers were subsequently arrested, to whom Veronica had paid one hundred thousand guilders, around forty-five three eighty euros, to get the ship into port so they could seize the ship, because RNI, according to them, had violated the mutual agreement. But the attack had the exact opposite effect of Veronica's intentions. It earned Radio North Sea considerable sympathy from listeners, and the station gained enormous popularity. However, the action also prompted Dutch government to finally tackle the offshore radio stations with legislation. Bill Verweij, one of the Verweij brothers, owners of Radio Veronica, and Veronica shareholder Norbert Jurgens, like three divers, were sentenced to prison terms.
