From New Atlas:
You can now make fish-free omega-3s from whisky waste
By Shirl Leigh
January 23, 2026
Omega-3 fatty acids sourced from wild-caught fish stocks
are valued for their studied health benefits such as healthy
skin, joints, heart and brain function along with enhanced
immunity, but this has resulted in a reduction in fish stocks
globally. A Scottish firm is working on a solution, in the form
of omega-3s made from whisky waste.
Fish don't produce omega-3 fatty acids themselves, but
from ingesting marine algae in their diet. MiAlgae, a Scottish
biotech company established in 2016, likewise uses the leftover
barley grains used in whisky production (that would normally
be discarded) to produce a plant-based, low-carbon alternative
to fish-based omega-3 fatty acids.
The nutrient-rich barley grain leftovers are used to feed
the algae in MiAlgae's specially designed fermentation
tanks, generating omega-3-rich micro-algae that is dehydrated
and processed into large quantities of fish-free omega-3 pet food
and commercial fish feed products.
The company states that modular production hubs can be
built quickly near distilleries and key customers, allowing it
to collect the grain leftovers with ease and efficiency.
MiAlgae has recently received an investment of 3 million
pounds from both the Scottish and UK governments. A new
production facility located in Grangemouth, Scotland is set to
open in early 2026 that will boost production by more than
tenfold and reportedly save six billion fish annually by
replacing marine-sourced omega-3, recycling 36.1 million liters
of whisky by-products.
MiAlgae claims that it has so far saved the equivalent of 2.1
million tonnes of CO2 emissions, used 639 million liters of
whisky by-products, and replaced 1.6 million tonnes of wild
fish.

From the BBC Media Centre:
BBC launches emergency lifeline radio programme for Iran
4 February 2026
The BBC World Service has launched a temporary emergency
lifeline radio programme for Iran in response to the ongoing
turmoil in the country, and the unprecedented crackdown on
protests.
To complement the existing BBC News Persian video and
digital services, the radio programme will be available on
mediumwave and shortwave across Iran to increase the population's
access to news and information. To broaden its offer and
availability of programming, the BBC World Service has also made
some of its TV content available on mediumwave radio.
Since 8 January, the Iranian people have been subject to
an internet blackout. Prior to this, BBC News Persian's
digital services saw their biggest reach in a year with their
platforms reaching more than 33 million people.
The short-term programme will cover the latest news
and developments in Iran and will place events inside the
country within their wider regional and international context. It
will feature voices from inside Iran alongside clear,
informed analysis of the most recent political, social, and
economic developments shaping the situation in the country.
The programme will air daily for 30 minutes across medium
and shortwave frequencies from 4.30pm GMT / 8pm Iran Standard
Time. The temporary programme has been granted resource from
existing funds until the end of March 2026.
Fiona Crack, Interim Global Director, BBC News, says: "A key
role of the BBC World Service is to step up in times of crisis
to provide news and information for our audiences in greatest
need. BBC News Persian reaches one in four adults in Iran, which
is an astonishing feat considering their reporting is banned in
the country.
"The team have been essential in telling the urgent story of
the Iranian people to audiences around the world, and our new
radio programme will give the Iranian people more ways to
access independent and impartial news."
Tarik Kafala, Interim Regional Director, Middle East and
North Africa, says: "BBC News Persian have worked tirelessly to
deliver journalism throughout this period of unrest as the demand
fortrusted news has soared in Iran. The teams have supplied
extended TV hours in Iran and an increased offer on digital
platforms for the Iranian people. They have reported for UK
audiences across bulletins, live pages and on forensic journalism
with BBC Verify."
The BBC World Service has a history of launching emergency
services in times of crisis. In April 2025, BBC News Burmese
started providing audio and video content on a satellite channel
in the aftermath of Myanmar earthquake.
In December 2024, following the fall of the Assad regime, the BBC
World Service set up an enhanced audio channel on FM and medium
wave for the people of Syria. This follows the emergency radio
service for Gaza in November 2023 and for Sudan in May 2023 amid
conflict.
In February 2022, the BBC News Ukraine service extended TV
bulletins following the invasion of the country.
Where to find the programme:
The live programme will be available at 4.30pm [1630] GMT
(8pm Iran Time) on 702kHz medium wave and 9465kHz
short wave
The programme will be repeated at 6pm [1800] GMT (9.30pm
Iran time) on 702kHz mediumwave and 5935kHz shortwave
A visualised version of the programme will be broadcast on
BBC Persian TV at 6pm GMT (9.30pm Iran time)

This is Peter John with the DX Headlines.
Radio Andorra was a station that had a lot of common with the offshore radio stations of the sixties and the seventies, just off the European coasts. The station was hindered and jammed by a neighboring country. It was taken to court, and a strong competitor was placed just a few kilometers away by one of the neighboring countries. The only difference with the pirate stations, Radio Andorra was a completely legal station throughout all of its existence, and it started as the only radio station in its country. Radio Andorra was active between nineteen thirty-nine and nineteen eighty-one. The station primarily broadcast music and was aimed largely at French and Spanish listeners. In its heyday, it was even available across much of Europe. Since the transmitters of Radio Andorra were not located on French territory, Radio Andorra was a so-called radio périphérique in the French radio landscape. That is to say, a station that broadcast in France, but despite the state monopoly on the radio, the French didn't have a say in this. However, they did have something to say. This is because of the unique state form of the independent country Andorra is. Andorra is a principality in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. The country doesn't have a president or a king or even a prince, when being a principality. It has two so-called co-princes, one of which is the Catholic Bishop of Urgell in the Spanish region of Catalonia, and the second co-prince is the president of France at that moment. So the head of state in France is also half of a prince, so to say, in Andorra. Hence, a complicated web of interests, where the inhabitants of Andorra would want an own radio station, and as one of the co-princes, this probably is or should be what the head of state would want for his people. But as the president of France, he has this state monopoly on broadcasting, not wanting a foreign party to interfere. So far, part one of the very special history of Radio Andorra, the legal station that had more in common with the illegal North Sea pirates than with the other legal stations in European countries.
This was Peter John for the DX Headlines on the Mighty KBC.
