Hello and welcome to the fifth episode of DigiDX, a review of the latest shortwave and DX news broadcast in the MFSK32 mode. This broadcast includes shortwave news and reception reports and a feature which is a comparison of the HFCC B15 and new A16
season schedules.

A16 schedules released

As mentioned in last weeks DigiDX, HFCC have now uploaded the co-ordinated A16 season schedule to their website. The schedule can be found here - http://www.hfcc.org/data/a16/
This give’s a good first look of what the A16 schedule will be however in some cases
broadcasters or frequency management organisations register frequencies with the HFCC as reserve frequencies with no intentions to actual use (often refered to as “wooden” registrations). For example GFC in Russia register many frequencies for Voice of Russia which
hasn’t been on shortwave since 2014.
This episode of DigiDX includes a comparison of B15 vs A16 schedules for some international broadcasts. A16 season starts on the 27th March 2016.
 

 

IRIB Radio website changes to Pars Today

Iran’s IRIB have relaunched their website as Pars Today at the http://parstoday.com/
 with the same 18 lauguage services that were previously part of IRIB World Service.
Although shortwave frequencies are included on the Pars Today site, Alan Roe (DXLD) contacted IRIB about an on-air name change but received the following - “"About the question that you posed I can tell you there is no changes in On air program, just our website has
changed to Pars Today.”
A member of the Russian DX site http://www.dxing.ru
 has posted an email from IRIB saying that IRIB shortwave broadcasts in Russian will end on 21st March 2016 (Persian New Year - Norooz), however this is yet to be confirmed.
 

 

 


In-car shortwave adaptor launched

A new shortwave radio developed especially to be used in a car has been launched and is currently for sale at http://carshortwaveradio.com/
. The BST-1 receiver is placed in the boot of the car and transmits the audio from the shortwave radio to an FM frequency that
can be tuned by the car’s original radio.
The radio is shielded from interference that could be caused by the car's engine or electrical systems and features full coverage from 2.3Mhz to 26.1Mhz. What is even more clever is the shortwave radio will broadcast its current frequency as RDS information so it
appears on the built-in car radio display and can be tuned via a small keyfob. The keyfob even allows entering of frequencies by tapping out the frequency number in morse code.
Videos of the radio in action are included on the website and it is available at a price of US$179.50.
 

 


Voice of Hope test and Radio Taiwan transmissions.

Voice of Hope has been running test transmissions on 6065kHz from their Zambia transmission site. Los Angeles based KVOH acquired the Lusaka site in 2014 from Christian Vision to expand its service beyond the current California transmission site.
The Southern African site has 12 buildings on 150 acres of land housing two 100 kW Continental shortwave transmitters and two high-gain TCI long range antennas to beam signals over all of west, central, and southern Africa. Ray Robinson from Voice of Hope has also
stated that a 31m band test will also take place (Source : DXLD).
 

 


Radio Taiwan International has also had test transmissions this week via WRMI on 11530kHz. These took place on March 13, 14 and 15 at 0000-0100 and 0200-0300 UTC. This is possibly for a change to the current RTI Spanish frequencies from WRMI (0200-0300 on 11920 and
0300-0400 on 5985).

 

 


The next segment of this broadcast is in MFSK32 mode and features a Base64 encoded zip file, inside the .zip file is a MIDI of a famous shortwave radio interval signal. To convert to MP3 go to http://www.digidx.uk/midi.php
 (and select the Convert ZIP option) or go to
http://www.motobit.com/util/base64-decoder-encoder.asp
 choosing to decode the data and export to file, the file can then be renamed a .ZIP file unzipped before the MIDI file is opened in Winamp or a similar software.

Alan Gale wrote to us about with a suggestion to talk about shortwave radio related software. His email talked about two pieces of software he uses, the first EibiView:

“....which allows the user to make use of the regular EIBI and AOKI broadcast station

updates, and view them in a window on your PC, showing which stations are currently operating on a particular frequency, or coming up next, and with an interface which can be customised and sorted to suit the user’s own personal preferences and languages. This

program was created by Tobias Taufer (T2) in Germany, and can be downloaded for free along with the updates from Eike Bierwirth’s website at:    http://www.eibispace.de/

He went on to add :

“Downloading the regular updates in both text and .csv format from there and saving them into the program’s folder ensures that the data is right up to date.”

Another program he mentioned is NAVTEXTview  - “this works in a similar way, but just for NAVTEX Stations. This program can also be downloaded for free from the NDB List website at:    http://ndblist.info/datamodes.htm”

Alan finished his email by staying:

“I think these two great programs are seriously under rated, and I would certainly recommend them, I think these are what would be classed as ‘hidden gems’, which far more listeners need to hear about.”

Don Wycoff from Connecticut, USA listened on 6070 via Twente SDR and 11850 on his own radio and wrote to say “I have been enjoying your Digital programs very much! Lots of fun. Your content is very interesting, about what we love, Radio! I would love to see more

images and MFSK128L.

I have been receiving VOA Radiograms for about a year and have enjoyed them. I’m glad we have DigiDx now to! This shows that Digital programs have a future in shortwave radio. They are easy to decode and I am proof of that, not being very tech savvy.

With VOA we have had perfect decode in often very poor reception conditions, in which a voice transmission would be very hard to copy.”

Jonathan Coles in Ontario Canada also listened on 11580kHz via WRMI and managed to decode the Base64 MIDI file “The base64 MIDI file decoded as the music I remember the BBC World Service used to play just before its news broadcasts”.

Yes Jonathan that is correct, as Richard Langley in New Brunswick says, the MIDI was  “ A rendition of the old BBC WS signature tune (for the English news) "Lilliburlero" as played on a flute. Nice. Info on the tune is on an old Web page buried on the BBC WS website:

NASA Plans to Light Large Fire in Orbiting Spacecraft

In order to see how fire-resistant to make the new lightweight
materials that will be used to build next-generation spacecraft,
NASA plans to start a large fire in space.

The test "is crucial for the safety of current and future space
missions," said NASA's Gary Ruff in an interview Tuesday with
AFP.

In the experiment, NASA wants to see how big the flames get, how
they spread, and the amount of heat and gas released.

The fire will take place aboard an Orbital ATK Cygnus capsule,
which is used to transport cargo to and from the International
Space Station, after it has made a drop-off.

The spacecraft will be launched March 23 from Cape Canaveral,
Florida, then head to the space station. Once it has moved a safe
distance away, NASA will trigger the fire.

Called "Saffire-1," the experiment is designed to give NASA
engineers a better idea about how fire behaves in space and how
much fire resistance to incorporate into new spaceships, as well
as space suits.

"Understanding fire in space has been the focus of many
experiments over the years," said Ruff, who added that while have
small fires have been purposely lit in space, NASA needs to
understand how a major fire would behave.

The fire is expected to burn for 20 minutes, during which data
about temperature, oxygen and carbon dioxide will be recorded.
The event will also be filmed.

Once the experiment is over, the capsule will re-enter Earth's
atmosphere and burn up.

Rotten Tomatoes Produce Renewable Energy

About 21-percent of world electricity generation is estimated to
be from non-fossil fuels such as the wind or sun.

But scientists hope to boost that number by looking at new ways
to create it – one of which involves spoiled fruit.

A team of researchers found that damaged or spoiled tomatoes can
be turned into a unique and powerful source of renewable energy
when fed to biological and microbial electrochemical cells.

And the good news is, there seems to be a nearly endless supply
of damaged and rotten tomatoes. Florida alone generates 396,000
tons of tomato waste every year.

The scientists admit that right now the power produced by their
tomato fueled energy cells is quite small.

But they're quite optimistic that with continued research they'll
be able to greatly increase the electrical output of their energy
cells.

U.S. Senators Seek New Center To Counter Russian, Chinese
'Propaganda'

WASHINGTON -- New legislation being introduced in the U.S. Senate
aims to improve Washington's efforts to counter "propaganda and
disinformation" spread by Russia, China, and other countries.

The bill, called the Countering Information Warfare Act of 2016,
comes amid growing calls in Congress and in many European
capitals to do more to fight foreign disinformation campaigns.

Russia, in particular -- through the portrayal of its actions in
Ukraine and along the peripheries of the European Union and NATO
-- has alarmed lawmakers and policymakers on both sides of the
Atlantic.

The EU has set up a small unit within the European External
Action Service to counter narratives spread by Kremlin-backed
media, such as RT and Sputnik, and government-sponsored Internet
activists. NATO has also set up a Strategic Communications Center
of Excellence, based in the Baltic state of Latvia, to counter
Russian propaganda.

Over the Horizon Radars Becoming Routine Visitors on Amateur HF
Bands

The International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 (Europe/Africa)
Monitoring System (IARUMS) reports a spate of over the horizon
(OTH) radar signals on various Amateur Radio HF bands — exclusive
and shared. Many of these signals are being heard outside of the
Region 1 confines.

A 50 kHz wide Russian OTH radar has been heard in the evening on
80 meters, often in the CW part of the band. An "often
long-lasting" Russian OTH signal about 13 kHz wide is being heard
on the 7000-7100 kHz segment of 40 meters, while some digital
traffic (FSK or PSK), and a "Codar-like radar from the Far East"
are being heard in the 7000-7200 kHz segment as well as
non-amateur CW transmissions.

The same OTH radar being heard on 40 meters also is appearing on
20 meters, along with digital traffic in FSK or PSK and on CW and
broadband OTH radar signals from China. Some monitoring reports
are intriguing, such as this one on 14.280 MHz from IARU Region 1
Monitoring System Coordinator Wolf Hadel, DK2OM: "Female voice
with encrypted msgs — figures — "SZRU" = Foreign Intelligence
Service of Ukraine in Rivne — every Wednesday at 1005 UTC."

Broadband OTH radars from China, Australia, Cyprus, and Turkey
have been monitored in 15 meters. On 10 meters, radars from Iran
with FM CW and different sweep rates have been monitored, as well
as fishery buoys on CW, and taxi operations on voice from Russia.

Voice traffic from fishing operations has been heard on all or
most HF bands, as well as a variety of broadcasters, including
Radio Tajik on 14.295 MHz, Radio Taiwan and Myanmar Radio, both
on 7.200 MHz, and Radio Hargaysa in Somalia on 7.120 MHz.
