Latest Shortwave News:
Mongolian Radio has reactivated
Will Radio Vatican be shut down?
Special DSWCI broadcast
C.DX.A - INTERNACIONAL"  CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF ACTIVITIES

Mongolian Radio has reactivated 4830 kHz

Thanks to Mauno Ritola on WRTH - World Radio Tv Handbook Facebook page:

"Thank you for the report Hiroyuki Komatsubara: Mongolian Radio has
reactivated 4830 kHz after long inactivity with their 2nd prgr; "Golden
Radio"." http://www.mnb.mn/live/radio2

This frequency was last heard from Mongolia in January 2015.

Will Radio Vatican be shut down?

Thanks to Kai Ludwig for the following story from a German website via
DXLD:

This is the headline of a report broadcast by a church policy programme
today:

http://www.deutschlandfunk.de/der-papst-und-die-medien-wird-radio-vatikan-abgeschaltet.886.de.html?dram:article_id=372345

The report says that the "still in 2016" target will not be reached, now
"in early 2017" is the deadline for implementing the "reform". All
details are still unclear: "Certain, and this is confirmed by various
sources, is only that a radical reorganization is imminent."

Anonymous sources voice their concern that the result to be expected is
"less programmes, less staff. Will it be the end of diverse programming
that consists not only of papal masses but of reports from current
affairs, music and culture as well?"

Another concern of the anonymous "opponents and critics of the project,
amongst them a lot of Vatican journalists" is that "in future the whole
communication will be controlled from a single office: the almighty
communications minister. Thus it seems that variety of programming and
editorial independence are at risk."

The report also has some statements from the head of the German service
who says that "it could be that the Radio Vatican brand will disappear,
it could be that we will appear under a new logo, this all is still
undecided".

  Special DSWCI broadcast

Thanks to listener Alan Gale for this news (via DXLD):

As well as the special programme about the Danish Shortwave Club
International, which has been made by the Rhein Main Radio Club, and is
listed for broadcast on 6145 kHz at 2000 UTC on the 17th of December via
the Shortwave Service in Germany, and using the 100kW transmitter in
Armenia, in this week's episode of Wavescan, Jeff White also said that
there would be a number of broadcasts via WRMI too, but will be in two
parts rather one.

I assume this will be the same one hour programme, but broken up into
two 30 minute segments instead, and broadcast a week apart. The times
and dates given by Jeff were as follows:

December  3rd    2300     5850.0 kHz    Part One
December  3rd    2330    11580.0 kHz    Part One
December  4th    2300     5850.0 kHz    Part One
December  5th    0230     9955.0 kHz    Part One

December 10th    2300     5850.0 kHz    Part Two
December 10th    2330    11580.0 kHz    Part Two
December 11th    2030    11580.0 kHz    Part Two

Now we have a review of the DX Patrol MK3 by Giampiero Bernardini. To
read the full review and view more images go to his blog at
https://playdxblog.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/sdr-dx-patrol-mk3-provato-su-smartphone.html

After reading a post by Claudio White IK1XPK on the last of the Patrol
DX version, that the Patrol DX Mk3 was released I decided to buy it
directly from the Portuguese producer and try it.

It is a SDR capable of covering from 100 kHz to 2 GHz. In practice in
the box (very small) there is a RTL2832U stick and an up converter that      <=== with a R820T-tuner
"moves" the LW and HF signals of 40 MHz (40 MHz local oscillator fo HF
conversion). All this is topped off with some bandpass filters , but
also a double USB port that allows you to charge your phone while you're
using it in connection with DX Patrol to hear. Tricksy not to download
the smartphone, which can also be powered with a battery power bank now
sold everywhere at affordable prices!

I must say that I had bought at the time of the first Patrol DX model,
but I was not very satisfied. That seems much improved , especially in
the VHF-UHF. Remember, though, that the quality of the end result is
also related to the software used . I tried some and below you will find
some brief remarks.

The first test was with the Android smartphone , a Samsung S5. The use
with the phone is the main reason I bought the DX Patrol Mk3

FM 88-108 receiving RDS information is good. You can also view, touching
the RDS button on the right, the PI code and other information.

The Patrol DX Mk3 he is working in HF , with the folded dipole roof. The
upconverter work in bringing the high signal of 40 MHz. Here I am
listening to a MW of 7155 kHz. I must say that in VHF results with your
smartphone and SDRTouch were acceptable. HF however I am not very
convinced ...

Very good instead, always with the Android smartphone, with the software
Wavesink Plus receiving DAB + . You can do an automatic search with
storage, or a manual. Of stations found also appears the channel and
frequency. In addition to the spectrum and other information. Too bad
that some are written microscopic ... at least for me.

With Wavesink Plus for Android you can tune in addition to DAB + also
the DRM + and the ' FM with RDS decoding

Wavesink Plus also has the ability to view a kind of talking scale with
the names of the radio found and stored. Just navigate through it with
your finger to select the desired. Here's an example in the images above
and below.

The DAB + frequency is always displayed. The excellent audio. So the use
of DX Patrol Mk3 is promoted with good grades for DAB +, FM 88-108 and
VHF-UHF in general . As listening to aircraft signals. For medium and
short wave would want something a little 'more refined. In my opinion.

The reasoning will change, however, if the Patrol DX is used with your
computer, Windows 10 in my case, and most appropriate programs for HF.
The reception image is much better than the smartphone.

Warning : I realized that not all of the Sample Rate (sample rate) that
can be selected are fine . In the first image of the two above related
to SDR sharp you see, on the left, which is set to the sample rate value
of 2.4 MSPS . This, like that of 1.2 , all right (see the pictures).
While others give a lot of images, unpacked signals. For example, in my
case, the SR smaller, 0250, is a disaster. A need for caution. Better
set 2.4 SR and then use the zoom to see better. If we want to improve
the resolution of the waterfall, even when using the zoom, just apply a
FFT value higher, even if the CPU works harder.

Remember, with DX Patrol Mk3, to set the shift -40,000,000 Hz (minus
sign) and select it by clicking on the box to the left of the set value.

We now see two other free programs with which DX Patrol Mk3 gets along

SDR Console V3 , still under development. This is the version of Preview
4 , not even a beta. But it's satisfying. This, below, however it is
always the Patrol DX Mk 3 but in action with SDRuno program , derived
from StudioUno software that was purchased by the receiver manufacturers
SDRplay a version dedicated to their receiver. This was made available
for free and can also support other receivers via Extio.

An important note : the EXTIO.dll files should be placed, at least one
copy, in the My Documents folder. Also to use a receiver supported by
SDRuno must invoke the program using the appropriate .exe file,
otherwise the program will try to SDRplay default. Recommend you read
the excellent manual in progress "The SDRuno Cookbook by Paul NN4F &
Mike KD2KOG”

I remember it being SDR Console V3 that SDR sharp , are also fine for
the VHF-UHF band and FM 88-108 allows you to decode the RDS, both the PS
that the PI code .

Warning: SDRuno for Extio rather not supports RDS , so no chance to
decode PS PI TXT

Even HDSDR allows you to better manage an SDR RTL, but I have not tried
it ... matter of time. It's a great program, but does not manage the RDS
decoder on the FM band, which however is important for me.

In summary

Overall it can be considered a decent radio at an affordable cost, 89
€ including shipping (no customs, comes from Portugal). But I wonder
whether it is better to focus on a SDRplay receiver (HF + VHF / UHF) to
132 euro including shipping, which appears much higher.

Unless you're looking for something small and very pocket friendly
especially with the Android smartphone , especially in the VHF and DAB +
reception, being able to also recharge while you use it to get, maybe
the DAB +. To this end, floating, you can use the power bank for 4, 6 or
more A for sale at affordable prices now also Autogrill.

Side note: the cable-microusb microusb provided by the manufacturer, in
my case it's a little 'yes and a little' no. Perhaps a chinoiserie
recently or perhaps depended on my cell phone. I do not know, however I
changed cable, I used one provided by Samsung, and things went okay.

Now follows an image of the SDR DX Patrol MK3.

Reception has been bad for many listeners over the last few weeks, however Olivia 64-2000 mode last week
seemed to have lead to an improvement despite the bad conditions.
Richard Langley in New Brunswick emailed to say:

"27 November 2016 20:30 UTC WRMI 11580 kHz

Reception was excellent. Decoding of the Olivia 64-2000 and MFSK text was PERFECT.
The MFSK32 image (DX club logo) was received very well and was virtually noise-free.
But no e-QSL card this week. An extended DigiDX IS was included at the beginning
but not at the end of the program.

27 November 2016 23:30 UTC WRMI 11580 kHz
Much, much better reception of the second broadcast this week compared to previous weeks.
Almost as good as the first broadcast but perhaps a little weaker and with more noise. Used
exactly the same setup as for the first broadcast (in fact, receiver was left in place and controls not
touched). Decoding of the Olivia 64-2000 and MFSK text was PERFECT The MFSK32 image (DX club logo)
was received well but with a bit more noise than the image from the first broadcast"
Thanks Richard, the e-QSL card will return next week for the previous two weeks broadcasts.

Thank you for listening, please send reports, comments and shortwave related news or articles to reports@digidx.uk.

US Coast Guard Chief Seeks Expanded Asia-Pacific Role

VOA News
November 30, 2016

The top U.S. Coast Guard official is eyeing a unique role for his
fleet in maintaining peace and stability in the East and the
South China seas under the incoming presidential administration.

By mirroring the role of China's Coast Guard in parts of the
Asia-Pacific, said Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Paul Zukunft,
the U.S. Coast Guard could be the face of U.S. military presence
in disputed waters without appearing too threatening.

"When you look at the East and South China seas, look at China's
Coast Guard, it is really the first face of China," he told VOA.
"So I've proposed to the Department of Defense that if they were
to leverage the U.S. Coast Guard, I would look at providing
resources to provide the face of the United States behind a Coast
Guard ship, and should that be a consideration for our approach
to the East and South China seas with the next administration."

Compared with blue-hulled destroyers or cruisers of the U.S.
Navy, white-hulled vessels of the U.S. Coast Guard, Zukunft said,
may be better positioned to get through the "narrow door of
diplomacy."

"The U.S. Coast Guard has a very good relationship with the
Chinese Coast Guard, with each side frequently boarding the
other's ships to carry out joint maritime law enforcement
activities," he said, adding that Coast Guard officials and rank
and file have had more frequent interaction with Chinese forces
than with those of other foreign nations.

Were the incoming administration open to the prospect, he added,
the U.S. Coast Guard also could help Vietnam, Indonesia and other
Southeast Asian countries develop maritime law enforcement
capabilities, and help maintain peace and security in the
surrounding waters.

Zukunft's deputy, Admiral Charles Michel, told a major naval
conference in February that commanders of the U.S. Pacific
Command also hoped the U.S. Coast Guard would send ships to the
South China Sea to assist the Navy in efforts to maintain
international order.

Over the past few years, China has frequently placed Coast Guard
ships at the forefront in its efforts to significantly step up
its claims of sovereignty in the East and South China seas.

service.

Thomas Edison Historic Site Electrifies Parks Traveler

Julie Taboh
December 1, 2016

Thomas Alva Edison famously once said, "Genius is one percent
inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration."

But Edison's one percent inspiration resulted in hundreds of
inventions that have revolutionized life for millions of people
around the world.

While he's best known for creating the first long-lasting
electric lightbulb in 1879, Edison also invented -- and perfected
-- more than 1,000 other products... from phonographs and
mimeographs, to storage batteries and the first talking doll.

Edison's favorite invention

His favorite, historians say, is the phonograph; the first
machine that could capture sound and play it back.

Edison lost his hearing in childhood, but he invented the
phonograph in 1877 as a young man and immediately fell in love
with it. So much so that he called it his "baby." He improved it
in incremental stages over the next fifty years.

An 1888 recording -- titled "Around the World on the Phonograph"
-- is believed to be the earliest existing recording of Thomas
Edison's voice.

Edison took his discoveries a step further the next year by
developing a phonographic (talking) doll, an invention that set
an early milestone in the history and technology of recorded
sound.

Thomas Edison National Historical Park

The house where Edison lived and worked in West Orange, New
Jersey, is now a U.S. National Park Service site where visitors
can step back in time and get a sense of the day-to-day life of
America's greatest inventor.

National parks traveler Mikah Meyer, who's on a mission to visit
all of the more than 400 sites within the National Park Service,
spent a day immersing himself in Edison history at the inventor's
home and laboratory.

"They do a really great job of basically saying that all the
technology that you now have -- and can access in your hand
through your smartphone -- would not exist was it not for Thomas
Edison's early work," Micah told VOA in a recent conversation.

A prolific inventor

"The lab helped produce some of Edison's most famous inventions,"
Mikah said, and added that it was a fitting place to have been
videotaping the complex on his cell phone. "If it wasn't for
Edison, we might not have this phone, or the electricity to power
it."

Much of the site has been kept intact, from the office and
library where Edison kept all his records, to the giant factory
next door.

"He had this giant storage container with basically anything and
everything you could think of… so it was this massive operation,"
Mikah said.

One of the things that was particularly interesting about the
complex, he noted, was that "rather than it being a place where
somebody designs [a product] at one firm, in one building, and
then somebody manufactures it at another, and they get the
resources from another place, everything was in-house. So they
were designing, they were building, they were shipping, all from
this one location that the National Park Service now preserves,"
he said.

With 400,000 artifacts and over five million pages of documents,
the site looks very much as it did when Edison was working there.

David Honess M6DNT was presented with a Sir Arthur Clake Award,
on behalf of the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation and the British
Interplanetary Society, for Space Achievement - Industry/Project
Individual.

This came after Mr Honess and his Astro Pi project which
installed two Raspberry Pi's (Izzy and Ed) on to the
International Space Station as the platform for students to run
their own code in space and speak with Major Tim Peake GB1SS.

Mr Honess has been "the driving force" behind getting two UK
