New Horizons Halfway to Next Flyby Destination

    Rick Pantaleo
    VOA Science World Blog
    April 4th, 2017

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft provided scientists an amazing
once in a lifetime look at the distant dwarf planet Pluto as it
flew by it in July 2015.

Along with spectacular images of Pluto the spacecraft also sent
back those of Pluto's five moons including high definition shots
of Charon its largest and Nix one it's smaller satellites.

The spacecraft also observed a dozen objects in the Kuiper Belt a
distant region of our solar system filled with objects made of
    ice and rock.

After the fly-by New Horizons has continued on the path for its
next fly-by destination a Kuiper Belt object called 2014 MU69
some 1.6 billion kilometers from Pluto.

Officials with the New Horizons mission report that the
spacecraft has recently reached its important halfway point
between Pluto and MU69 and will be put into a 157 day hibernation
    period.

New Horizons is expected to conduct its flyby of 2014 MU 69
    sometime in January 2019.

Graphene-oxide Membranes Could Make Seawater Into Freshwater

    VOA News
    April 3, 2017

ADe tthod could turn seawater into drinking water for millions
around the world without access to clean water.

Researchers at the University of Manchester in England say
they've successfully used graphene-oxide membranes to filter
common salts from seawater, turning it into drinking water more
    affordably than current desalination techniques.

Graphene-oxide membranes have already been shown to be effective
at filtering small nanoparticles, organic molecules and large
salts, but they had not yet been effective in filtering out
    common salts.

"This is the first clear-cut experiment in this regime," said
professor Rahul Nair, at the University of Manchester. "We also
demonstrate that there are realistic possibilities to scale up
the described approach and mass produce graphene-based membranes
    with required sieve sizes.

"Realization of scalable membranes with uniform pore size down to
atomic scale is a significant step forward and will open new
possibilities for improving the efficiency of desalination
    technology," he said.

The United Nations says that by 2025, 14 percent of the world's
    population will suffer water scarcity.

Previous attempts to use the membranes saw smaller salts passing
through, researchers said, but the Manchester group discovered
that the size of the pores on the membrane could be "precisely
controlled" allowing it to block smaller salts.

Specifically, the researchers said the graphene-oxide membranes
have tiny capillaries that stop the flow of salts, while allowing
    fresh water to pass through.

"The developed membranes are not only useful for desalination,
but the atomic scale tunability of the pore size also opens new
opportunity to fabricate membranes with on-demand filtration
capable of filtering out ions according to their sizes," said
    co-lead author Jijo Abraham.

Ebay's Founder Pledges $100 Million to Fight Fake News, Hate
    Speech

    VOA News
    April 5, 2017

Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar's philanthropy promised $100 million
over the next five years to support journalism and fight fake
    news, the foundation announced Wednesday.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ),
which broke the story of the controversial Panama Papers, is the
first organization to receive funds from the Omidyar Network - a
three-year grant of up to $4.5 million "to expand its
    investigative reporting."

"Across the world, we see a worrying resurgence of authoritarian
politics that is undermining progress towards a more open and
inclusive society," Matt Bannick, Omidyar Network Managing
Partner, said. "A lack of government responsiveness and a growing
distrust in institutions, especially the media, are eroding
trust. Increasingly, facts are being devalued, misinformation
spread, accountability ignored, and channels that give citizens a
    voice withdrawn."

Formally announcing the commitment at the Skoll World Forum on
social entrepreneurship in Oxford, England, the Omidyar Network
has also promised support to the Anti-Defamation League, devoted
to fighting anti-Semitism, and the Latin American Alliance for
    Civic Technology (ALTEC).

Established in 2004 by Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam, the
Omidyar Network supports organizations to foster economic and
    social change.

Reporting on the Panama Papers revealed secret, so called
offshore financial accounts that were hiding assets to avoid tax
    payments.

NOAA's Biggest Ship Comes Home After Longest Voyage

    AP via voanews.com
    4 April 2017

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's largest
oceanographic research vessel has returned to its home port after
the longest deployment of any ship in the agency's history.

NOAA Ship Robert H. Brown spent almost 800 days at sea during the
three-year deployment. NOAA says the ship traveled almost 130,000
miles conducting scientific research and servicing buoys that
    collect environmental data.

The agency says the ship's tasks included a rapid response
mission to observe the 2015-16 El Nino. It also took more than
1,600 measurements in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, ranging
from Iceland and Alaska to Antarctica.

The Robert H. Brown also surveyed more than 350,000 square miles
of seafloor and conducted ecological assessments of fisheries off
    Alaska's Arctic coast.

The ship's homeport is Charleston, South Carolina.
