Planet Hunters Find Another 'Earthy' Planet in Our Galactic

Kevin Enochs
April 18, 2017

The hits, they just keep coming!

News was made in February when astronomers found seven potential
earth-like planets orbiting the red dwarf star Trappist-1.

Wednesday, another red dwarf star is making headlines with the
announcement of a 'super earth' found orbiting around the small
red star LHS 1140.

Super Earth?

VOA spoke with Jason Dittmann, from the Harvard-Smithsonian
Center for Astrophysics, about the find.

He is the lead author of the paper laying out the new findings,
which is being published Thursday in the journal Nature.

He calls the planet a "Super Earth," not because it's any better
than our blue-green sphere, but because it "is somewhere between
the size of the Earth (the largest rocky planet in the Solar
System) and Neptune. These planets are actually pretty common,
but we don't have any of them in our own Solar System so we don't
know much about them."

Finding one is a big deal in general. But this one, dubbed LHS
1140b, is extra-special because it has turned up in the dwarf
star's habitable zone, that area in space where liquid water can
exist on the surface.

The planet is 10 times closer to the star than Earth is to the
sun, but red dwarfs are much smaller and much cooler than the
giant inferno that keeps us warm.

The other special thing about this planet is that it's about 5
billion years old, and according to Dittmann, "Five billion years
should be more than enough time for life to develop [if it's easy
to develop, no one knows!] So this is definitely a good thing."

Too close for comfort

In general, one big problem with the habitable planets scientists
have found around red dwarfs and this goes for a few of the
seven they've found on Trappist-1 and Proxima b, another found
last year is that they are so close to their star that the
stellar radiation that is bombarding the planets can literally
strip away any atmosphere.

And this may be the case here.

But LHS 1140, according to team member Nicola Astudillo-Defru,
"spins more slowly and emits less high-energy radiation than
other similar low-mass stars." That's good news because the
planet is so old and so big that chances are decent that it's
managed to hold onto an atmosphere.

Another bit of good news is that terrestrial planet LHS 1140b as
seen from earth passes almost directly in front of its star, and
that makes it a lot easier to do follow up research that Dittmann
and his colleagues are already planning.

"We're definitely already applying for as much telescope time as
we can get our hands on," Dittmann says, "to start looking at
this planet's atmosphere. And when the next generation of
telescopes come online [The James Webb Space Telescope, and the
ground-based Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) and
European-Extremely Large Telescope (EELT)], we'll be in a great
spot to find out what sorts of atmospheres planets around M
dwarfs have."

The Webb telescope is expected to launch next year, but the Giant
Magellan telescope won't be online until 2025, and the EELT won't
be working until 2024.

That's a long time to wait, and undoubtedly there'll be a long
list of planets to explore by then. But the hope is that by
studying the atmosphere of all these planets in the habitable
zone, we might find some of the biological signatures of living
things. Two of the European members of the team, Xavier Delfosse
and Xavier Bonfils say that it's the best candidate so far.

"The LHS 1140 system might prove to be an even more important
target for the future characterization of planets in the
habitable zone than Proxima b or TRAPPIST-1. This has been a
remarkable year for exoplanet discoveries!" wrote Delfosse and

And there certainly will be more on the way.

Prominent Communist Party Critic Guo Speaks With VOA China

VOA News
April 20, 2107

WASHINGTON - The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Interpol issued a
"red notice" Wednesday for the arrest of billionaire and
Communist Party critic Guo Wengui but gave no details of his
alleged crimes.

"What we understand is that Interpol has already issued a 'red
notice' for criminal suspect Guo Wengui," foreign ministry
spokesman Lu Kang told reporters.

The comments came as VOA's Mandarin service aired a live
interview with Guo, who had previously said he would provide
details about corruption involving Chinese leaders.

Chinese concerns

Chinese officials had expressed concerns to VOA about the
interview before it took place but declined repeated offers to
rebut his claims during or after it aired. In the past, Guo has
made allegations of secret businesses controlled by senior
Chinese leaders or their families. He outlined more details in
Wednesday's interview, which have not yet been substantiated.

Guo, who spoke live to VOA for an hour, suggested that the
Interpol notice for his arrest was politically motivated and
aimed at preventing the interview.

On Twitter, he dismissed the allegations from China, calling the
red notice "suicidal behavior coming from truly corrupt officials
who fear I will expose their crimes."

Guo revealed that he, not unlike other businessmen originating
from China, maintained a relationship with the State Security
Bureau, an organ responsible for espionage and the monitoring of
Chinese citizens overseas. He said the Security Bureau would lend
support to his business undertakings while tasking him with
gathering information and reaching out to dissidents abroad as
well as the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama.

Dalai Lama

Guo says he has met the Dalai Lama "several times" and has in his
possession a copy of a letter the Dalai Lama had written to
President Xi and Meng Jianzhu, who presides over the party's
powerful Political and Legal Affairs Committee.

A U.S. representative of Dalai Lama told VOA that "we also took
note of what Mr. Guo said during the interview this morning. With
regards to his meetings with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Mr. Guo
himself made public through his Twitter account sometime ago of
photographs of himself with His Holiness. Whether he was the
conduit for His Holiness' correspondence with President Xi and
Meng Jian Zhu, I have no specific information nor the dates."

Before the interview, VOA had announced on its Chinese-language
website that Guo would reveal "nuclear-grade" information in the
planned three-hour interview, which was to be broadcast live
during one of its regular TV programs and continued on social

Chinese officials had contacted VOA journalists expressing
concern over the planned interview and urged it be canceled.

VOA interview

VOA management decided to proceed with the live interview,
broadcasting one hour live and then taping the rest and
publishing additional reporting on the interview afterward, said
VOA spokeswoman Bridget Serchak.

"We had multiple plans to conduct additional interviews with the
subject for social media and late yesterday [Tuesday] made the
editorial decision to record this material, edit, and post it in
the coming days," she said.

"In a miscommunication, the stream was allowed to continue beyond
the first hour. When this was noticed the feed was terminated. We
will release content from these interviews and will continue to
report on corruption issues," she said.

Senior Russian Lawmaker Calls RFE/RL, VOA, And CNN Part Of U.S.
'Pressure System'

April 18, 2017

A senior Russian lawmaker has called RFE/RL, Voice Of America,
and CNN part of an "American system of pressure" targeting

Leonid Levin, chairman of the committee on information policy in
Russia's lower chamber of parliament, made the remarks during an
April 18 committee hearing examining whether the three U.S. media
outlets are in compliance with Russian laws.

The hearing comes amid heightening tensions in already frayed
relations between Moscow and Washington following the Kremlin's
alleged meddling in last year's U.S. presidential election and an
escalating standoff over the civil war in Syria.

Russian lawmakers ordered the probe last month after U.S. Senator
Jeanne Shaheen (Democrat-New Hampshire) introduced a bill that
would empower federal authorities to investigate RT, Russia's
state-backed international news network, for possible violations
of U.S. law.

Levin called RFE/RL, VOA, and CNN "part of a broader,
wide-reaching American system of pressure on our country."

But he said his committee would not formally ask federal
authorities to check whether the outlets are complying with
Russian law, the Interfax news agency reported.

Putin and senior Russian officials have long accused the U.S.
government of trying to stoke political unrest by funding
watchdog groups and other nongovernmental organizations.
Washington has repeatedly dismissed the allegations.

Both RFE/RL and VOA are overseen by the Broadcasting Board of
Governors (BBG), a U.S. agency that supervises civilian
government broadcasting and media operations. VOA is a federal
entity, while RFE/RL is a private, nonprofit organization funded
by a grant from the U.S. Congress.

With reporting by RFE/RL's Russian Service, Interfax, and TASS
