10-m-Bake DMØAAB wieder in Betrieb

Radio Tamazuj to increase broadcast time

broadcaster Unification Media Group (UMG) has had its 7515kHz jammed daily since the 1st of
March 2016. this month. “This is the strongest signal jam in the last few years. As the regime is pushed into further isolation by the strongest round of sanctions yet, they have become concerned that the residents will be awakened by exposure to outside information,” Unification Media Group
(UMG) President Lee Gwang Baek said.
UMG currently broadcasts from 1300-1600 on shortwave frequencies via a
transmission station in Dushanbe, Tajikstan. The frequency
for A16 is listed in the HFCC as 11550kHz.

best over the years too). A real classic ,with no plastic gears , no dial strings to break , no preselector to have to fiddle with and no menu's. The set's excellent non hissy - non distorted audio , good AGC (all modes, see text) , super wide IF filter capability and large internal speaker, all give for the best audio of ANY other set Kenwood receiver EVER made (in our testing and view). No microprocessors and only uses a PLL synthesizer. . .One can cheat the sets mode buttons to allow use of the wider bandwidth filters use in SSB modes (even allowing DRM reception without any converter when connected to a computer with the DREAM software).
Uses no plastic gears or dial strings in the
tuning system.”

Zertifikat zur Teilnahme am „Logbook of the
World“ - kurz
LoTW genannt - zu bekommen.
Die DXCC-Kartenprüfer dürften dann die Verifizierung übernehmen. Voraussetzung
10-m-Bake DMØAAB wieder in Betrieb
weithin sichtbaren Mast angebracht.
Schleswig-Holstein in Gross-Vollstedt statt.
experimentieren.
interessierter Jugendlicher in
Umgang, Einsatz,
Anwendung und Weiterentwicklung von Funktechnologie. In zahlreichen Workshops
30A in 1040 Wien,
WA.R.D. lautet in diesem Jahr:
„Erinnerung an die Rolle
des Amateurfunks in der Gesellschaft“. Weltweit werden Funkamateure anlässlich
des Welt-Amateurfunktages am 18. April Betrieb machen und dieses Motto unter
Beweis stellen.

North Korea radio jamming intensifies
The DailyNK website has this week reported that jamming by the North Korean
regime has intensified. The South Korean not for profit broadcaster Unification
Media Group (UMG) has had its 7515kHz jammed daily since the 1st of March 2016.
Although UMG’s signal has been jammed since 2005, this has sometimes been
sporadic and not as strong as the jamming that has started this month.
“This is the strongest signal jam in the last few years. As the regime is pushed
into further isolation by the strongest round of sanctions yet, they have become
concerned that the residents will be awakened by exposure to outside
information,” Unification Media
Group (UMG) President Lee Gwang Baek said.
UMG currently broadcasts from 1300-1600 on shortwave frequencies via a
transmission station in Dushanbe, Tajikstan. The frequency for A16 is listed in
the HFCC as 11550kHz.
IRIB Russian Update
In DigiDX 5 it was mentioned that some posters on the dxing.ru forum had
mentioned IRIB (Iran) russian langauges broadcasts would cease on the 21st March
(Persian New Year). However this rumour seems to have been unfounded with
Russian language broadcasts from Iran
continuing after this date.
Extra: TWR to Europe to end
TransWorld Radio Europe are to end Shortwave tranmissions to Europe at the start
of the A16 season.
DigiDX returns to MFSK32 mode....
Now we start the first part of a two part feature from premium radio addict Dan
Robinson who presented a presentation on his views on the best receivers of all
time at the Winter SWL Fest in Pennsylvania last month.
Dan has kindly let DigiDX republish this presentation in text form and we start
with part 1 which includes Boatanchor and Tabletop receivers.
A Dive Into Nostalgia: My Picks For The Best Receivers Of All Time
REQUIREMENTS TO MAKE MY LIST
●Excellent Sensitivity
●Selectivity Options
●Robust Design and Flexibility
●Audio Quality
●That “LOOK”
THE LIST: BOATANCHORS
●Hammarlund HQ-180/C/A/X
●R-390/A Various Versions
The HQ-180 and R-390A dominated the hobby for many years, and were used by many
of the world's top SWLs from the late 1960s through the 1990's. Both are still
highly-prized.
Hammarlund HQ-180/A/C/X
Heavy boatanchor - combines multiple reception tools, including Telchron with
excellent sensitivity. Some accessories, such as the clock, and IF noise
silencer, are extremely rare.
Hammarlund HQ-180s are frequently seen on Ebay. Depending on condition, prices
can get into the $500-600
range, but are usually lower.
The HQ-180 has been used by many of the top DX'ers.
Some excellent alignment videos can be found at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7tDDYRZ1k4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCAtxctfxTM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCgJ_J8847I
There has been debate about the use of tube shields. The 180 to 180A upgrade of
the receiver eliminated the 5U4 heat-producing rectifier tube. Alignment can be
complex for the inexperienced, but is fairly routine for those with electronic
knowledge and equipment
R-390A VARIOUS MANUFACTURERS
●Decades after introduced, still considered by many to be the finest receiver
ever made
●Built like a tank, geared tuning, high sensitivity
●Mechanical digital readout
●26 tubes, 85 pounds without cabinet
●EBAY prices range from hundreds for rough shape receivers into $1,000 to $2,000
+ range for restored with cabinet
●Solid State rectifier, 3TF7s available from Ebay sellers
●Dwindling number of 390 experts who will refurbish
●Tubes still widely available
R390/A – HOT, HUGE PERFORMER
Tabletops:
JAPAN RADIO COMPANY NRD-515 One of a few solid state PLL receivers to combine
signal processing flexibility, sensitivity of classic tube receivers, adding
tremendous stability
Features:
Passband Tuning Control
Delta Fine Tune Control
Four Position Selectivity
Rapid UP/DOWN Slewing
Three position AGC
Robust metal construction
Superb Accessory Options
Adjustable Master Oscillator
DRAKE R7/A -: One of the most feature-laden receivers of all time
● Extraordinary Tuning Flexibility
● High Sensitivity
● Five Selectivity Options
● Drake Passband Tuning
● Multiple Antenna Options
● Notch Filter
● AUX Program Control & Pre-Amp
● RIT Linked to RV-75
DRAKE R8 SERIES
From the early 1990's through early 2000s, Drake made a strong re-entry into the
SWL market, producing first the R8, followed by the R8A and R8B. Drake had a
huge reputation to recover, having produced the R7/A which was, in the judgment
of many top DX'ers, one of
the best if not THE best general coverage receivers ever produced. The company
hit it out of the park....
●Superb sensitivity
●Excellent selectivity options
●Notch filter and Passband Tuning
●Multiple Multi-mode Memories
●Scan functions (vastly improved in R8A and B models)
●VHF Converter Option
●Excellent Stability
●Adjustable Master Oscillator
●Synchronous Reception (not selectable on R8)
●Beautiful smooth audio
Drake R8 series receivers are now extremely common on Ebay and elsewhere on the
used market. They represent probably the best value in a sophisticated receiver
and can be had for an expenditure of only hundreds of dollars (except for the
R8B)
SONY ICF-6800W – A Design and Performance Classic
●Extraordinary Sensitivity
●Pre-selector tuning
●Superb Audio
●Antenna/Input Flexibility
A Sleeper Classic: Kenwood R-1000
● Excellent Sensitivity
● Clock/Timer Flexibility
● Simple Yet Accurate Tuning/Adjustable
● Multi Attenuator
● Robust Metal Construction
● Selectivity Modifiable
● Superb Audio
● AC/DC Options
● Antenna Coax or Straight Wire Inputs
Kenwood R-1000 Review : “Yes, we feel the Kenwood R-1000 is the best receiver
that they ever produced (and that has held up the best over the years too). A
real classic ,with no plastic gears , no dial strings to break , no preselector
to have to fiddle with and no
menu's. The set's excellent non hissy - non distorted audio , good AGC (all
modes, see text) , super wide IF filter capability and large internal speaker,
all give for the best audio of ANY other set Kenwood receiver EVER made (in our
testing and view). No microproce
ssors and only uses a PLL synthesizer. . .One can cheat the sets mode buttons to
allow use of the wider bandwidth filters use in SSB modes (even allowing DRM
reception without any converter when connected to a computer with the DREAM
software). Uses no plastic gears
or dial strings in the tuning system.”
If you have any views on your favourite receivers of all time please send them
to reports@digidx.uk
and we will publish some of your views next week.
We now switch to MFSK64L mode to include another famous Shortwave interval
signal, the file is a .zip file which includes a .MIDI file. To convert the
BASE64 text to MP3 go to http://www.digidx.uk/midi.php
(and select the Convert
ZIP option) or go to
http://www.motobit.com/util/base64-decoder-encoder.asp
choosing to decode the data and export to
file, the file can then be renamed a .ZIP file unzipped before the MIDI file is
opened in Winamp or a similar software.

Reception Reports and Letters
Thank you for all the reception reports sent in for episode 5.
The broadcast featured a mistake and the BASE64 section was broadcast twice,
however some listeners used this to their advantage - Richard Langley from
Canada writes to say - “The two versions of the Base64 text each had a number of
errors. But as I mentioned in my
FaceBook comment, by cutting and pasting using both copies I got a perfect
decoding and retrieved the midi file of the Radio Australia "Waltzing Matilda"
IS as played on a piano. I think I had suggested sending base64 files twice as
it's all or nothing with them
(like DRM) and you can't guess characters like you can in words if you miss
some”
Yes Richard you are correct the MIDI File was of the Waltzing Matilda interval
signal.
Christian Denoux wrote from France to say “Pour conclure , le dimanche matin sur
Christian was telling us of another opportunity to listen to digital modes via
the amateur bands and some Olivia32-1K he decoded on 14105.7kHz.
Sakae Obara in New Jersey listened on 11580Khz on Sunday at 2330 and has
mentioned DigiDX in his blog (in Japanese). Read his account of the broadcast
here - http://goo.gl/RUq5Lm
A few listeners mentioned Alan Gales email asking for recommendations for
shortwave related software, Ralf Urbanczyk in Germany said “Information about
additional software provided by Alan Gale seems to be interesting. I am just a
beginner in digital decoding, never
tried Navtex and similar things as yet.”
Roger from Germany sent in some tips about broadcast Base64 files, using FLMSG
and FLWRAP which we will hope to use in future broadcasts of DigiDX. He also has
said “ "Eibi view" is a good program, but csvUserlistbrowser is very much
powerful!!! With csvUB I do
remote control (viar HDSDR / STUDIO1 ) a FRG1000 and an IC-R75” He included the
link to the software -

Study: 'Collect Crops' Wild Relatives for Future Food Security'
VOA News
March 21, 2016
Many wild relatives of important food crops, which could be used
to help those crops adapt and thrive in an environment impacted
by climate change, are missing from the world's genebanks.
Researchers with the Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change
project mapped more than 1,000 crop wild relatives (CWR) of rice,
potato, maize, wheat and 77 other important crops, and found
significant gaps in the species that have been collected, and the
geographic regions represented in genebanks.
Plant breeders tap the genetic diversity of CWR to develop crops
that can handle higher temperatures, increased soil salinity and
more severe disease outbreaks. For example, genes from a wild
rice species were used to make domestic rice varieties resistant
to a virus that cost Asian farmers hundreds of millions of
dollars in crop losses in the 1970s. A wild tomato species
provided genes that boosted the global tomato industry by $250
million per year.
Missing from collections are wild relatives of banana, cassava,
sweet potato, pineapple, spinach and more. The research,
published in the journal Nature Plants, shows that more than 70
percent of essential CWR species are in urgent need to collection
and conservation. Some species identified as high priorities are
in war-torn regions, or areas threatened by deforestation.
According to report co-author Colin Khoury, a scientist at the
International Center for Tropical Agriculture, "The world's food
supply is in a precarious position of depending on too few crop
plant species." The project's findings, he added, give
scientists the first comprehensive global overview of which
plants are missing and where collectors need to search for them.

Rare Flower Blooms at US Botanic Garden
Julie Taboh
March 22, 2016
Visitors at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington got a rare
treat recently when they learned about the surprise appearance of
a rare bloom.
In the 20 years it's been on display, the Jade Vine, also known
as Emerald Creeper, has only bloomed once before, says Devin
Dotson, the Garden's public affairs and exhibit specialist.
Standing on a high walkway in the hot and humid "Jungle Room" of
the Garden, Dotson pointed out that the flower starts "high up in
the canopy and works its way down."
"Its blooms are going to just grow and grow and grow," he said.
"The vines will go all the way down to the ground, so visitors
even down below — in another few weeks — are going to be able to
see this magnificent color."
The striking blue-green shade of the flower clusters "look almost
fake," Dotson remarked, adding that it's totally natural. "We
don't have to dye it, and we're really excited to share this with
our visitors."
The flower, officially known as Strongylodon Macrobotrys, is
closely related to legumes, such as kidney beans and runner
beans. It's normally found in the tropical forests of the
Philippines, and for a short time only, blooming in all its glory
at the U.S. Botanic Garden.

Urban Birds Smarter Than Rural Counterparts
VOA News
March 22, 2016
Those pigeons you see by the tens in many cities, may be smarter
than their less urban counterparts, according to a new study.
Writing in the journal Behavioral Ecology, researchers from
Canada’s McGill University say that may be because they’ve had to
adapt to city life by learning to take advantage of new sources
of food and other life-sustaining needs.
For the study, the researchers compared urban and rural
bullfinches in Barbados, looking for "differences in
problem-solving abilities such as opening drawers to access
food," and city birds had a bolder temperament.
"We found that not only were birds from urbanized areas better at
innovative problem-solving tasks than bullfinches from rural
environments, but that, surprisingly, urban birds also had a
better immunity than rural birds," says Jean-Nicolas Audet, a
Ph.D student in the Department of Biology and first author of the
study.
He added that his team expected to see a trade-off, "just because
we assumed that you can't be good at everything. It seems that in
this case, the urban birds have it all."
